On Sunday morning, Jimmy mows my lawn while I’m reading on my porch. He’s helped Jonny doing it a few times before, so he knows what he’s doing.

I can’t help looking up from my book and admiring his beautiful, though sweaty torso.

A couple of young women taking walks ogle him, but Jimmy ignores them.

A petite brunette wearing a tight T-shirt that shows the shapes of her little breasts stops at the fence and waves at Jimmy. Jimmy politely waves back and stops the machine.

“Aren’t you in my English 125?” she asks.

Jimmy hesitates. “Yes, I’m taking English 125.But I’m sorry I don’t remember seeing you.”

The girl looks a bit disappointed. “It’s probably because you’re so tall, and I’m tiny,” she says coquettishly, thrusting her front a bit to look less tiny. “I’m Tina.”

“I’m Jimmy. Nice to meet you!”

He gives the girl his sweaty hand to shake, and she holds it for a long time.

My book drops to the porch floor before I can catch it. The noise attracts their attention. Both turn to look at me.

I pretend not to notice as I pick up my book. As they continue their conversation, I stand up and go into the house.

I open a can of Budweiser and pour it down my throat, hoping it’ll quench the fire burning in my chest. I don’t like what I saw earlier, although it was a perfectly normal picture of a young couple socializing, or flirting.

Normal. Yes, that’s the problem. It makes me realize what I’m doing is abnormal. I’m fucking a man young enough to be my son.

I’m jealous of Tina. Even though she’s tiny and unimpressive looking, she’s young. Any normal man would choose her over me, at least according to Mr. Darwin and his natural selection theory.

I plunk onto the chair with the beer in hand, displeasing Inky, who’s taking a nap.

She jumps onto my lap as if to protest, demanding affection. I stroke her to apologize. “You old pussy,” I say with a sigh. “Why aren’t you out playing with your boyfriend? Has he deserted you, too?”

Inky ignores my silly question and drifts into a nap soon.

I continue to dwell on my misery even though I keep reminding myself Jimmy is different, and he’s crazy about me, just like his brother Jonny. Although he’s left me now, Jonny was with me for almost a year, a good enough example to refute Mr. Darwin’s theories.

Yet still, he’s too good to be true. I keep thinking what I’m experiencing is a fantasy, not real.

I’m on my last sip when the door opens and Jimmy comes in.

“I’m done with the lawn, Linda. Do you want me to trim the lemon tree, too?” he says as he approaches me.

“Sure. If you want to,” I say carelessly.

His expression changes as he senses something is wrong. “Are you okay? Why’re you drinking beer at this time of the day? You never do that.”

“Oh, I, uh, just feeling silly.” I force a smile. “Just leave me alone. Your new friend is waiting for you.
